Professor
Prof. Mario Maas is an academic MSK radiologist in Amsterdam who enjoys all three academic opportunities. He is a clinical radiologist focused on sports injury especially in high performing athletes, focused on detailed clinical relevant imaging assessment of small joints, especially foot, ankle, elbow and wrist. Close collaboration with clinical partners is key. He is appointed preferred partner at the National Olympic Committee.
Mario Maas is Professor of Radiology with special focus on musculoskeletal radiology. He is section leader of MSK radiology at the department of Radiology, Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is born and raised in Amsterdam, where he also followed his medical school. He graduated in 1995 as a radiologist also in Amsterdam at the department of Radiology at the Academic Medical Center, in which he is still working. He finished his PhD thesis ‘in June 2002.
Mario Maas is co-founder of ACES, Academic Center for evidence based Sports medicine, an athlete centered institute in which tailored clinical care is combined with front running research on sports specific Imaging. The center was awarded IOC accreditation in 2015. Aces and Amsterdam UMC, location AMC provide the science and care surrounding the players of Ajax.
He is also founder of the Musculoskeletal Imaging Quantification Center (MIQC) of the Radiology department of the AM. The center explores the development of musculoskeletal imaging biomarkers and its translation in clinical practice.
His main research topics are: Joint and tendon disorders, muscle pathology. sports Imaging, bone marrow MRI, small joints cartilage pathology and biomarker definition and bone and bone marrow evaluation in lysosomal storage disorders.
Mario Maas is director of Amsterdam Movement Sciences (AMS), a research cooperation between both universities of Amsterdam for all movement research. He focusses on mentor and guidance of young researchers in a wide Musculoskeletal field.
He is the (co)author of over 300 peer reviewed papers and more than 10 book chapters. He is the supervisor of 12 PhD thesis projects. See below the top 5 of his peer reviewed publications. In education Mario is keen on interactions with students both in the lecture hall as well as small group teaching settings. He had been chair board medical school and is currently chair of the exam board of Medicine.
In Europe he is treasurer of ESSR, has been involved in ESR and ECR and ESOR activities. He is regularly part of conference Faculty.
He is editor of Imago, a Dutch radiology paper (since 2015), co-editor of the European Journal of Radiology (since 2011) and member of the board of Pediatric Radiology (since 2017).
Mario is married to Annelies, psychiatrist, for 26 years. Together they have two sons, Bart 24 Msc Human movement sciences and Rutger 22 years, Bsc Hotel Management.
