Wouter Schallig

Post-doctoral Researcher

Wouter Schallig is a human movement scientist focusing on foot and ankle biomechanics. He obtained his PhD at the department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Amsterdam UMC in 2022 with a thesis entitled: ‘The  Amsterdam Foot Model, advancing the clinical assessment of multi-segment foot kinematics during gait’. He works as a postdoc on the BIORUN and Focus on Feet! projects at the Amsterdam UMC. The BIORUN project focuses on studying biomechanical factors that play a role in the development and recovery of Achilles tendinopathy in trained runners. He is also a member of the board of the Rehabilitation & Development program of the Amsterdam Movement Sciences research institute.

Sicco Bus

Professor

Sicco Bus is a human movement scientist, professor of clinical biomechanics, and principal investigator at the Amsterdam University Medical Center, department of rehabilitation medicine, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Sicco completed his doctoral dissertation on the structural and functional aspects of the neuropathic diabetic foot. In his current work at Amsterdam UMC, Sicco devotes his time to initiating, coordinating, and supervising research on lower-extremity biomechanics and injury prevention in diabetes, sports, and neuromuscular populations. Sicco is a member of the editorial board and chair of both the ulcer prevention and offloading working groups of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot. Sicco is chair of the Neurovascular Complications of Diabetes study group in the Netherlands. He is also a member of the board and program leader for Rehabilitation & Development of the Amsterdam Movement Sciences research institute.

Igor Tak

Post-Doctoral Researcher

Igor Tak (1971) is a sport physical therapist working both clinically as well in research and post-graduate education. He is clinical director and consulting sports PT at OOST Physiotherapy Utrecht, a multi disciplinary clinic focusing on sports injury, rehabilitation and research. He holds teaching positions at (international) post-graduate institutes and is currently developing a Masters Program on Elite Athlete Health and Performance at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with Amsterdam University Medical Centre and Amsterdam Collaboration on Health and Safety in Sports.

He performed his doctoral research on hip and groin pain in athletes. His current main research topics are: 1. Injury mechanisms in relation to optimizing return to sports pathways in hip, groin and knee injury; and 2. Sensor technology development and clinical application: from lab to the pitch. He supervises several PhDs.

Hans Tol

Staff

Hans Tol is a Sports Medicine Physician at the Amsterdam Medical University Centers (University of Amsterdam), AFC Ajax and visiting professional at Aspetar in Qatar, which is accredited as one of the eleven IOC research Centers.

He is also graduated as a human movement scientist (master VU, Amsterdam). Tol is an expert in conducting randomised controlled trails in the field of tendinopathy, muscle injuries and regenerative medicine, including platelet rich plasma and cell therapy. His interdisciplinary sports medicine research focuses on acute muscle injuries, degenerative tendinopathy, risk factor identification and prevention of sports-related injuries.

Besides his clinical work and research projects, he carried out extensive sports medical fieldwork through positions in professional soccer. Since 2004 he worked for the Royal Dutch Football Association, including the U21 National Team. He played in the highest youth teams of a Dutch professional premier league soccer team (somewhere in a previous century).

Evert Verhagen

Chair

Evert Verhagen (1976) is a human movement scientist and epidemiologist who holds an University Research Chair on the topic of "Sports, Physical Activity & Health". He chairs the department's research theme 'Sports, Lifestyle and Health'. Evert is also the co-director of the Amsterdam Institute of Sports Sciences (www.aiss.nl), and chair of the Amsterdam Collaboration on Health and Safety in Sports; one of the 10 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Centers of Research Excellence for the Prevention of Injury and Promotion of Health in Athletes.

His main research topics are: 1. Prevention of sports and physical activity related injuries (including cost-effectiveness and implementation issues); and 2. Physical activity promotion integrated in everyday life. He supervises several (inter)national PhDs and post-docs, divided across these two topics. Within the department he fulfils teaching responsibilities for the faculties of Medicine, Human Movement Sciences and Health Sciences, next to individual supervision in research training.
